Always remember the following when asking and gaining permission to hunt:

-Be polite and courteous!
-Respect the land and the landowner!
-Learn something about them-what they like to do, food they like, their family, etc.
-Pick up after yourself!
-Stop back after the hunt and let them know how much you appreciated the access to their property, and say thank you again! Offer them some of your catch, or maybe cash.
-Remember them at the major holidays-cards, hams or turkeys, and gifts will make you a welcomed guest year after year.

In the event you do get permission, be prepared to offer more than a verbal "thank you". Bring some goodies for your host, something that their family can enjoy. And put some thought behind it-don't buy something at the local five-and-dime down the road that they could get anytime. Chances are, if you leave a positive lasting impression, the following years will be easier to gain access, and you will probably develop a new and lasting friendship.

One thing that is critical is having a permission slip.  I also like to use this as an oppurtunity to explain that the landowner will not be held responsible in the event of an accident.  And the revised ODNR permission slip does just that.  I also like to fill out two and give one to the land owner as well.
